| 2005 | Petrali Blythleigh Peter and Alison Engel love Rhone varietals. Their hill property on the East side of the town of Sonoma is ideally suited for growing Syrah. So when Ali told me who was making their wine, Kian Tavakoli, former winemaker for Clos du Val, I couldn't wait to try a sample. If you are familiar with the legendary Clos du Val Winery, you know that their house style has always been very French. Collectors who have cellared their Cabernets, are rewarded with elegant, long-lived beauties. When I tasted the 2005 Petrali Blythleigh, I was hoping against hope that they were shooting for a Northern-styled Rhone red. This blend of Syrah, Viognier, Mourvedre, and Petite Sirah didn't disappoint. Raspberry and floral-scented bouquet, this supple, medium-bodied red tastes of cassis, white pepper, and wet slate. | $39.95 | ||

| 2009 | Januik Cabernet Sauvignon Mike Januik, formerly the winemaker for Chateau St Michelle has been making wine under his own label for a while now, but he still seems to be undiscovered. I've been a fan of his well-priced, vibrant Cold Creek Vineyard Chardonnays. This 2009 Cabernet is off the charts. This wine was the talk of a trade tasting recently and for good reason. It's a mouthful of great Cab fruit, much of it from the great Champoux Vineyard. It's a complex wine with tar, blackberries, lavendar, cedar, and fine-grained tannins, impeccably balanced, with a finish that goes on and on. The 2008 received an other-worldly glowing review from the Wine Spectator and a 94 pt score. | $29.95 |
